5 Things You Need to Know if You Want to Move Abroad!

5 Things You Need to Know if You Want to Move Abroad!

ts been almost 4 years since I moved out of the US, and I have to say, that life abroad has been an incredible journey. From Beirut to Hong Kong, my years living outside the US have been transformative. Each city has been unique and presented it’s own challenges, but it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey and I have learned and grown so much.

More and more Americans each year are making the jump move abroad as well, or starting to seriously plan their moves. So if you are in the same boat of starting to think about moving abroad, here are 7 expert tips you need to know.

5 Things You Need to Know if You Want to Move Abroad!

Where do I even start when planning a move abroad?

Research, research, research! Begin with a deep dive to narrow down destinations, and learn about what life will be like there. If you’re not even sure which destinations to start thinking about, reflect on your past travels and what you loved or hated about places you’ve visited.   Consider the cost of living, visa requirements, job market, healthcare, culture, and climate. Social media can be an amazing tool to get started, but don't over rely on it.  Be sure to dig into official government websites, local and international news sites,  and expat forums. Create a detailed checklist to keep yourself organized.

How much money do I need to save before moving abroad?

This varies greatly depending on your destination and lifestyle. Factor in visa fees, flights, initial accommodation (deposit and rent), living expenses for at least a few months, and an emergency fund. I am pretty risk adverse when it comes to finances, and I always say it's better to overestimate your new cost of living than underestimate.

There have been countless horror stories of expats and digital nomads that moved abroad with no plan or savings and ended up homeless in a foreign country - do not make their mistakes! Aim for a financial cushion that allows you to settle in comfortably without immediate money worries. I understand that you may really want to move out of the US as soon as possible and the necessary savings may delay your move abroad timeline, but it’s worth it to be careful on this front and take your time to properly plan and save.

What about taxes? How do I handle expat taxes once I move abroad.

This is a big one! America is one of few countries in the world that taxes it’s citizens on their worldwide income, so you will need to plan for that. Depending on your income,  you might be eligible for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE), which means that income under a certain threshold is not subject to taxes. The amount 2024 is $126,500 of foreign-earned income and $130,000 for 2025,  but that number does change, so keep up to date with guidelines. And consider using a service like My Expat Taxes to simplify the process.

What should I avoid after I move abroad?

There are some common mistakes future and potential expats make. Some are in the planning process, like underestimating the cost of living, not researching visa requirements thoroughly, or just entering a country on a tourist visa and overstaying or conducting business, which is usually not allowed.  Another common mistakes is failing to learn the local language. While you don’t always necessarily have to become fluent in the language before you move, it’s always a good practice to learn a few important words and phrases to show respect to the locals.

And be sure you understand and adhere to local laws, especially ones that may be very unique to your destination.

I’m afraid to leave my friends and family, and I don’t know how I will I make friends as an adult

This was one of my biggest fears the first time I moved abroad, and it was intimidating every time I changed countries! But I can tell you from experience, you will be fine. The beautiful thing about being an expat, especially an American abroad, is that gives you instant common ground and an opportunity for connection with thousands of people just like you. I have made so many friends just in casual interactions, like them recognizing my accent in line at the grocery store.

However it is important for you to be intentional about putting yourself out there and making friends. This can be hard, especially for introverted personalities, but you will have to see that as an opportunity for personal development. Stay proactive and engaged in your new life and it will all work out.

Moving abroad is a significant decision, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can be an incredibly rewarding adventure. Don't let the unknowns hold you back. Start planning today, and let me know any questions in the comments here or on Instagram or TikTok!
